A wildfire broke out Friday afternoon near the village of Omodos, prompting a swift and large-scale response from firefighting teams. At the peak of the operation, five firefighting aircraft, eight fire trucks from the Fire Service, and five vehicles from the Forestry Department were battling flames spreading through dry grass, wild vegetation, and trees west of Omodos.

The fire quickly drew support from multiple agencies, including the Hunting Service, Civil Defense, two volunteer firefighting groups, and local authorities who brought water tankers and earth-moving equipment to help contain the blaze.

Social media lit up with photos and videos showing thick plumes of smoke billowing above the area, while officials took precautions to protect nearby homes within Omodos.

As a safety measure, authorities closed the main road connecting Omodos to Pachna, advising drivers to avoid the route and follow police instructions to prevent traffic issues.

By late afternoon, the Fire Service’s press spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, gave an optimistic update: “The fire has been demarcated and we are on our way to full control.”

The quick and coordinated response highlights ongoing efforts to manage wildfires in Cyprus, especially during the hot, dry season when the risk of fires is high. Residents and visitors in the area are urged to stay alert and heed any safety warnings from officials.
