Fires close in on homes as heat fuels twin blazes in Cyprus

Firefighters battle flames in Nicosia and Limassol; aircraft deployed, evacuations underway, and residents on edge as wildfires rage.

Firefighting crews battled blazes in two districts of Cyprus on Wednesday, as flames tore through dry riverbeds and hillsides, forcing evacuations and drawing in aircraft support, including from the British Bases.

The first fire broke out between the communities of Anageia and Deftera in the Nicosia district, burning through wild vegetation, trees, reed beds, and even immobilized vehicles in the Pedieos River area. Though the flames spread dangerously close to homes, firefighters managed to protect the residences from damage, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.

Kettis described the blaze as “manageable,” adding that the burned area spans roughly three hectares. Eight fire engines, six Forestry Department vehicles, and two firefighting aircraft were deployed to the scene. Volunteer group SupportCy was also notified and offered assistance.

Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished.

Meanwhile, a larger and more dangerous wildfire erupted near the village of Malia in the Limassol district around midday. The fire spread rapidly, prompting emergency evacuations of homes by firefighters as they awaited backup from Civil Defense units.

Six fire engines from the Limassol City and District Fire Stations, plus support from the Forestry Department and organized volunteers, responded to the scene. With flames threatening wider areas, the “ICAROS II” aerial firefighting plan was activated, bringing in six aircraft, including assistance from the British Bases.

Police closed off the Malia–Omodos and Malia–Arsos roads for safety.

With much of Cyprus baking under scorching summer heat and dry conditions, officials are urging the public to avoid activities that could spark new fires. Investigations into the causes of both fires will follow once containment is complete.
