Private pharmacies in Cyprus have been left uncertain about their flu vaccine supplies after a supplier unexpectedly cancelled orders placed around six months in advance.
The cancellations come as the flu vaccination season approaches, potentially affecting people who are not eligible for free vaccination through the state programme but wish to purchase their doses privately.
The affected orders were intended for members of the public seeking vaccination through private pharmacies in consultation with their personal doctors. They include university students and others who are prepared to cover the cost themselves.
According to information reported by Sigma, pharmacists received written notification at midday that their orders could not be fulfilled, despite having submitted them months earlier in accordance with the supplier's instructions.
The Pancyprian Pharmaceutical Association has brought the matter to the attention of the Pharmaceutical Services and is asking the Ministry of Health to intervene urgently to find a solution.
The cancellations have left questions over how people who fall outside the state vaccination programme will obtain their flu vaccines this season.
Demand from the private sector is significant, with annual orders for flu vaccines reaching up to 50,000 doses. The availability of these supplies is particularly important for people who wish to be vaccinated but must arrange and pay for the service privately.
No further details were provided on the reason for the cancellations or when the affected pharmacies might receive replacement supplies.
