The Legal Service has given the green light to prosecute former Paphos Mayor Phaedon Phaedonos in connection with an alleged rape and indecent assault from 2014. Sources say investigators have now finished gathering evidence, and the case is set to move to court.
The file has been sent back to the police to prepare the formal charges. It’s expected that the case will start in the Paphos District Court before being sent to the criminal court due to the serious nature of the allegations.
The investigation began after complaints from a businessman and the alleged victim. The case has gone back and forth between the legal service and police over the past few weeks as they completed the required checks and gathered all evidence.
Officials stress that being accused doesn’t mean he’s guilty. The former mayor will have his day in court, and a judgment will only be made once a judge reviews the evidence.
The case is expected to be formally filed in court within the next few days, moving the long-running investigation into the next phase.
