The body was discovered Sunday evening when authorities were notified about a fire in an open field. Police also got involved after a burned body was spotted next to a hay ball along a coastal road in Larnaca district.
According to Kathimerini Cyprus, the male corpse is believed to belong to a foreign male, while DNA tests have been ordered to identify the body. Initial reports said the body was found to be tied up while police said they determined during the course of the investigation that there were no signs of criminal activity.
Larnaca police spokesperson Charalambos Zachariou said on Sunday night that it was “too premature to say anything” about the case.
“I can only confirm that the body was found under suspicious circumstances,” Zachariou said.
Asked by reporters whether a suspicious vehicle was located which possibly could have transported the dead body to the field, Zachariou said “at this stage we cannot say anything beyond what I have already stated.”
A post mortem was scheduled for Monday morning.
