Newsroom
If the sky looks a little unfiltered today, you can blame the dust. A weak low-pressure system is currently drifting over the island, bringing a cocktail of haze and clouds that feels a bit indecisive. It’s a grey start to the weekend, but don’t let your guard down. The weather has a few tricks up its sleeve for later.
Today is going to be a slow burn. We are starting off mainly cloudy, and for most of the morning, it will just be a "gloomy Friday." However, as we head into the afternoon, the atmosphere will lose its patience. Expect isolated showers to pop up, particularly if you are in the west, the southwest, or driving through the mountains.
The wind is currently blowing from the northeast to southeast, keeping things breezy but manageable (3 to 4 Beaufort), though occasional gusts will act up (5 Beaufort), stirring the sea into a rough state. Temperature-wise, it’s a "one layer" kind of day: we are looking at a uniform 15°C across the inland and coastal areas, while the mountains remain a crisp 7°C.
Tonight is when the real drama arrives. The weather will turn noticeably grumpier, bringing local rain and isolated thunderstorms. It’s going to be a noisy night for some, with hail possible during storms and snow or sleet dusting the highest peaks of Troodos. If you have Friday night dinner plans, make sure you park close to the entrance.
The weekend outlook
Saturday: We wake up to the leftovers of tonight's storm; rain and snow in the mountains. But wait for it...a noticeable improvement is promised by the afternoon. The skies should clear just in time to salvage your Saturday evening.
Sunday: The mood lifts significantly. We’ll see some intervals of clouds and perhaps a mountain shower, but the temperatures will finally rise back to normal seasonal levels.
Monday: The new week starts partly cloudy, keeping things relatively calm until the evening.
Snow update: The white blanket on Chionistra has settled to 19 cm, but with fresh snow likely tonight, the peaks should be looking refreshed by tomorrow morning.
