A Greek Cypriot man has been sentenced to six months in prison by a "court" in occupied Nicosia after being found guilty of presenting an altered vehicle insurance document.

According to reports in the Turkish Cypriot press, the case concerned an insurance certificate whose validity dates had allegedly been changed. During the proceedings, it was stated that the document was presented to an "immigration officer" at the Agios Dometios crossing point on April 28, 2026, as the man sought to enter the occupied areas.

During the proceedings, the "court" examined evidence that the insurance document no longer reflected its original dates. The "judge" described the offence as a serious matter because it involved the use of a falsified official document and related to requirements connected with road safety.

In delivering the sentence, the "court" said such offences have become increasingly common and require penalties intended to discourage similar conduct. The "judge" concluded that imprisonment was the appropriate punishment in this case.

The defendant's admission of guilt and his cooperation with "police" investigators were taken into account when determining the sentence.
