A head-on collision on the highway between Kalo Chorio and Larnaca Airport claimed the life of an elderly driver Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. when an 80-year-old man, Anastasios Michaelas of Larnaca, was driving in the wrong direction on the highway from the Rizoelia roundabout toward Kalo Chorio. His vehicle collided head-on with a taxi driven by a 32-year-old man.
Michaelas died at the scene from injuries sustained in the violent crash. The taxi driver was seriously injured, but authorities said his condition is stable and not life-threatening.
Traffic was diverted as emergency crews worked to clear the scene, causing delays along the route to Larnaca Airport.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the wrong-way driving incident.
