Severe flooding in Nicosia has forced authorities to respond to dozens of emergencies and close key roads in the city. According to Andreas Kettis, spokesperson for the Fire Service, the department has received over 60 calls for assistance since the heavy rains began.
Crews have been deployed across multiple neighborhoods, including Strovolos, Engomi, Lakatamia, and old Nicosia, primarily to clear stormwater drains on public streets. In one notable incident, a school bus became trapped on a flooded section of Agiou Meletiou Street in Lakatamia. Fire and rescue teams were able to safely evacuate the students.
Response efforts involve nine Fire Service units, three teams from the Nicosia Civil Defense, three from organized volunteer groups including Support Cy and ETEA, and one Civil Defense unit.
Several roads in Nicosia, including Alexandroupoleos and Erythrou Stavrou Streets, have been closed due to bridge overflows. Drivers are being advised to use alternative routes and monitor official Police channels for updates on weather and road conditions to avoid delays and accidents.
