Identity of body found at sea on Wednesday still unconfirmed

DNA testing underway amid missing Russian businessman investigation.

Authorities are still waiting on DNA results after a man’s body was found in the sea off Cyprus’ southern coast, a discovery that has intensified speculation around the disappearance of a Russian businessman who vanished earlier this month.

The body was spotted earlier this week near the Avdimou coastline, in an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the British Sovereign Base Areas. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, investigators were unable to immediately identify the remains.

Police have not confirmed the man’s identity, but sources say DNA testing is underway to determine whether the body belongs to a Russian businessman who was reported missing from the Paphos district in early January.

The businessman had last been seen at his residence, prompting a search operation that included land and coastal checks. Until now, no trace of him had been found.

A post-mortem examination has already been carried out, with forensic specialists collecting samples to help establish both the identity of the deceased and the cause of death. Officials say results from the DNA analysis are expected in the coming days.

Authorities stressed that it is too early to draw conclusions, noting that all scenarios remain on the table, including an accident, suicide, or criminal activity. No injuries have been officially confirmed, and investigators are treating the case with caution.

The discovery has attracted heightened attention due to the man’s reported background and the sensitive nature of recent cases involving foreign nationals on the island. Police, however, say there is currently no indication linking this case to any other ongoing investigations.

For now, officials say confirmation will depend entirely on forensic results, urging patience as the identification process continues.
