Internet sleuths go silent on CEO’s murder

Frustration with U.S. healthcare fuels silence as online detectives refuse to help catch the killer

In the wake of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s murder in New York City, a striking silence has emerged from the typically active online community of amateur internet sleuths. Unlike other high-profile crimes that spark a wave of online detective work, this case has seen little to no effort from popular social media sleuths to help identify the masked gunman who fatally shot Thompson.

Instead of rallying to solve the case, many internet figures, including TikTok creators with millions of followers, have expressed apathy or outright refusal to get involved. Content creators like Savannah Sparks and thatdaneshguy have openly stated they will not aid in the investigation, citing dissatisfaction with the state of U.S. healthcare as a reason. Some have even used the phrase “claim denied” to express their lack of sympathy, referencing the often-criticized practices of major health insurance companies.

This sentiment reflects growing public frustration with the U.S. healthcare system, which many perceive as unjust and profit-driven. A recent Gallup poll revealed that Americans' perception of healthcare quality is at a 24-year low, with over half rating coverage as “fair” or “poor.” Thompson’s position as a health insurance executive has led some online commentators to express support for or even celebrate the killing.

The few individuals who have attempted to assist the investigation, such as software engineer Riley Walz, faced backlash and were labeled as “snitches” on social media. This hostility toward those aiding police efforts may have further discouraged others from stepping in.

Experts suggest that the lack of empathy for the victim, who was a wealthy CEO, and a sense of disillusionment with the healthcare system have contributed to this unusual response. The absence of widespread internet sleuthing highlights a broader discontent with systemic issues in U.S. healthcare and the perceived disparity between corporate interests and public well-being.

Despite the NYPD’s release of surveillance footage and a reward offer of up to $10,000, no suspect has been identified. Investigators continue to track the shooter’s movements, but the typically enthusiastic online crime-solving community remains notably silent, underscoring a deeper frustration that goes beyond this single tragic event.
