A 40-year-old woman was arrested in Limassol after allegedly assaulting a police officer while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

According to police, officers responded shortly before 10am on Monday following reports of a woman behaving erratically on a roadway while under the influence of alcohol. Upon arrival, they found her sitting on a pavement with her legs extending into the street. Authorities said she appeared heavily intoxicated and was unaware of her surroundings.

For her own safety and to establish her identity, officers transported the woman to a police station. Police said that while there, she became verbally abusive towards officers, shouting insults in English.

During efforts to manage the situation, the woman allegedly became aggressive, pushing an officer and biting the officer's hand.

She was subsequently arrested and remains in custody while investigations continue into offences including intoxication, assault and insulting a police officer.

The officer involved was examined by a doctor and was not found to have sustained any serious injuries.
