Investigation underway of Turkish Cypriot lawyer arrested in Rome

Cyprus Government Spokesman addresses European warrant related to property issues in occupied territories

Newsroom

In light of initial evidence, the Cyprus government suggests that Turkish Cypriot lawyer Akan Kıursat, recently apprehended in Rome for allegedly selling Greek Cypriot property in the occupied areas, may not have traveled from Larnaca, according to Government Spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis. Clarification on this matter is expected in the coming days, as investigations into the case are ongoing.

Responding to inquiries on Thursday about the arrest of the Turkish Cypriot lawyer, Letymbiotis confirmed that the case is currently under scrutiny. Regarding Kıursat's involvement in issues concerning properties in the occupied territories, Letymbiotis noted the existence of a European warrant issued in 2007, citing reasons for the warrant, including allegations of the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties.

Addressing the measures being contemplated by the government for ongoing cases related to property usurpation, the spokesperson mentioned an ongoing study of legal actions. However, he emphasized that no official announcements could be made at the moment.

When pressed for details on the charges leading to the Turkish Cypriot lawyer's arrest, Letymbiotis explained that it pertained to warrant enforcement, and Cypriot authorities are in contact with their Italian counterparts. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to examine the documents in Kıursat's possession.
