It's a sweet start to summer as Cyprus basks under the strawberry moon

The season’s first full moon lights up the sky and our hearts with a gentle golden glow.

The skies over Cyprus lit up in soft gold and silver hues last night as the first full moon of summer made its grand entrance, and with it came a name as sweet as the season: the Strawberry Moon.

From Nicosia to the coast, people looked up and snapped photos, took quiet walks, or simply paused to soak in the moonlight. Suspended in a clear, balmy sky, the June full moon cast a dreamy glow over rooftops and treetops, marking not just a change in the calendar but a change in mood, the unofficial start of summer.

Despite what the name suggests, the moon wasn’t pink or red. The “Strawberry Moon” doesn’t refer to color but to timing. The name comes from North American Indigenous tribes who marked this full moon as the signal that strawberries and other summer fruits were ripe for picking.

Still, for skywatchers in Cyprus, the moon's soft shimmer was a feast for the eyes.

“It’s one of those nights where you don’t need fireworks,” said a Nicosia local. “The sky is doing all the work.”

While the Strawberry Moon doesn’t bring any special astronomical event beyond its fullness, it has long held cultural and spiritual significance. For many, it’s a moment to reflect, set intentions, or simply take a breath before the fast pace of summer fully kicks in.

And in a world that moves fast, a quiet moment beneath a glowing sky is a small but welcome gift. If you missed it last night, the moon will still be nearly full tonight, a second chance to look up, pause, and maybe make a summer wish.
