Johnson: Bug discovered after Netanyahu used office toilet

Netanyahu's bathroom break linked to foreign office bug

Newsroom

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claims in his new book that a listening device was discovered in a private toilet at the British Foreign Office after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used it during a meeting.

In the book, Unleashed, Johnson writes that Netanyahu, whom he refers to as "Bibi," asked to use the bathroom during their meeting. Afterward, Johnson's security team reportedly found a bug during a routine sweep of the area. "Bibi went there for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence, but I was told later, when they did a regular bug check, that they found a listening device," Johnson recounts.

When asked by The Telegraph for further details, Johnson said, "everything you need to know about that incident is in the book."

It remains unclear if Israel was reprimanded over the matter. Around the same period, Israel faced accusations of placing surveillance devices near the White House. U.S. officials concluded that Israel was likely behind cell phone surveillance devices found at the White House and other sensitive areas in Washington.
