Limassol hosts vibrant music festival on World Music Day

Seven musical groups will grace three different parts of Limassol, offering a delightful mix of genres

The Alliance Française de Limassol, celebrating its 60th year of cultural presence, is organizing a vibrant music festival in collaboration with the Limassol Municipality and the French Embassy, coinciding with World Music Day. The festival, held in various squares of Limassol, offers free admission to the public.

Seven music groups will fill the air throughout the event with joyful melodies in different parts of the city. Kicking off the festival at 5:45 pm, the dynamic percussion ensemble, Batukinio, will embark on a "musical walk" from the Molo Theatre to the old port.

At 6 pm, Michalis Cacoyannis Square in the Old Port of Limassol will come alive with performances from three diverse musical groups. The Papadakeio Municipal Conservatory will showcase classical music, Trio Rodine will enchant the audience with Mediterranean songs, and French Connection will captivate with a fusion of French songs and jazz.

The Music Day celebration originated in Paris in 1982 under the initiative of Jacques Lang, the Minister of Culture at the time.

The festival's grand finale will occur at 8 pm in Castle Square, featuring a lineup of outstanding music groups. Gaba Project will mesmerize the crowd with their Handpan and Lyra performance, Con Yapa will infuse Latin jazz into the atmosphere, and the Irinaeos Koulouras Trio will serenade with their enchanting jazz melodies.

The Music Day celebration originated in Paris in 1982 under the initiative of Jacques Lang, the Minister of Culture at the time. Since 1985, the event has expanded beyond French borders. Athens, the European Capital of Culture in 1985, became the first non-French city to host Music Day.

Over the years, the Festival of Music has evolved into a prominent European and international cultural event, observed on June 21st in more than 120 countries across all five continents. From Ireland to Kazakhstan, from Australia to the Baltic countries, and now Cyprus, this celebration unites musicians, both amateurs, and professionals, from diverse backgrounds and genres.

During Music Day, municipal spaces, squares, streets, parks, and various other venues are transformed as musicians, unpaid and hailing from all musical genres, showcase their talents. This inclusive celebration serves as a platform for cultural exchanges and collaborations between emerging and established artists from different nations.

The event is supported by the Cyprus Ministry of Culture and sponsored by R.I.K., contributing to a truly memorable and enriching experience for all.
