Police investigate suspected murder in Katholiki area; family had no prior history with authorities

A quiet neighborhood in Limassol was shaken early Wednesday morning by a suspected case of premeditated murder after a man called police to report that he had stabbed his elderly father to death.

Authorities say the 47-year-old suspect contacted the Limassol police station at around 4:15 a.m. and calmly confessed to killing his 80-year-old father, Georgios Hadjigeorgiou, inside the family home in the Katholiki area.

When officers arrived, they found the elderly man slumped in a chair, bleeding and unconscious. A kitchen knife, believed to be the weapon used, was found nearby. Paramedics who were called to the scene confirmed that the victim had no signs of life.

The 47-year-old was immediately arrested under a court-issued warrant and remains in police custody. The motive behind the incident is still unclear.

“The investigation is in its early stages,” said Lefteris Kyriakou, spokesperson for the Limassol police, speaking on state television. He added that the family had never drawn the attention of authorities before and there had been no known history of domestic issues.

The crime scene was cordoned off while investigators continued collecting evidence throughout the day. Forensic experts were brought in, and an autopsy is expected to clarify the cause of death and whether the victim sustained multiple injuries.

Meanwhile, life around the neighborhood continued quietly, with the Limassol Vocational Training Institute, located nearby, going ahead with scheduled exams despite the heavy police presence.

Authorities have yet to announce whether the suspect will undergo psychological evaluation or whether he has made any statements since his arrest.

The investigation is ongoing.
