A 32-year-old Greek Cypriot had a frightening experience early Thursday after accidentally entering the occupied areas of Cyprus while driving from Vrysoules toward Dhekelia.

According to reports, the man took a wrong turn onto a dirt road and ended up in the occupied territory. He reportedly stopped because he needed to relieve himself.

He was spotted by authorities in the area and fled on foot, leaving his vehicle behind, to return to the government-controlled side.

The case is under investigation by the Police of the British Bases, and the man was been summoned to give an official statement later Thursday.

The United Nations has been informed and will begin procedures to arrange the return of the vehicle.
