The man who struck and killed a woman on the Nicosia–Limassol highway has been arrested, police said on Monday, as investigators work to piece together how the deadly crash unfolded.

The victim, 71-year-old Sylvia Maria Jones Georgiou, was hit by a passing car driven by a 64-year-old man near Skarinou. Police said the driver was taken into custody under a court-issued warrant.

According to authorities, the suspect was tested for both alcohol and drugs, with zero alcohol detected and a negative drug test. At this stage of the investigation, police say there are no indications of excessive speed or mobile phone use.

Despite that, the man is being investigated for offenses related to causing death by negligence and negligent driving, police said.

Early findings suggest the woman had pulled over and parked her vehicle in the safety lane of the highway, in the direction of Limassol. While she was outside her car, under circumstances that are still being examined, she was struck by the oncoming vehicle.

Police officers and an ambulance crew rushed to the scene. The woman was transported to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

The Larnaca Traffic Department is continuing its investigation into the fatal collision.
