A devastating car crash early Saturday morning on the Limassol–Nicosia highway has claimed the life of 17-year-old Aliki Nicolaou, a former resident of Lympia.
The accident occurred shortly after the Kofinou exit in the direction of Nicosia, when the double-cab vehicle carrying Aliki and four other young passengers lost control. According to police reports, the vehicle collided with the interior divider barrier and overturned.
Authorities indicate that the driver was attempting to merge onto the highway from a left-turn acceleration lane near the Kakoratzi area. The circumstances leading to the loss of control remain under investigation. The four other occupants, residents of villages in the Larnaca and Nicosia districts, were rescued by the Fire Service and sustained only minor injuries. They were treated at Larnaca General Hospital and subsequently released.
Aliki, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Police also confirmed that the driver tested positive on a preliminary breathalyzer test but refused to provide a final sample. He was arrested on the spot.
The Larnaca Traffic Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
