In an effort to support local ecosystems and strengthen beekeeping activities, Larnaca’s mountainous communities have been planted with more than a thousand specialized trees and plants. The initiative was led by the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP), in collaboration with the newly formed Honey Network organization and the nine “Beekeeping Villages” of the region, with backing from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

The planting event, held in the village of Oras, brought together coordinators, community council presidents, and members from all nine villages: Oras, Odou, Melinis, Vavatsinia, Agioi Vavatsinia, Vavla, Kato Dry, Kato Lefkara, and Lagia. The trees and plants were distributed at the gathering for gradual planting across the region.

Species selected for this project include Callistemon, terebinths, almond trees, and aromatic plants such as lavender. These plants were chosen for their staggered blooming periods, providing a reliable food source for bees throughout the year.

The initiative forms part of ETAP Larnaca’s broader strategy to promote sustainable tourism, enhance the beekeeping sector, and foster a cohesive identity for the Beekeeping Villages. Previous efforts under this strategy include the creation of two beekeeping trails in Vavatsinia and Vavla, the development of children’s “bee parks” in Odou, Oras, and Melinis, and the digital mapping of all nine villages.
