A chemical mishap is believed to be behind the fumes that forced the evacuation of a building in Larnaca which also houses the Tax Department, after a woman reported feeling unwell. Early findings from the Department of Labour Inspection suggest that the incident likely stemmed from the improper mixing of cleaning chemicals during work on the building’s toilets and drainage system.
According to Tasoula Kyprianidou Leontidou, head of Chemical Protection and Safety Services, investigators have not located any product containers and no individual has taken responsibility so far, but all indications point to misuse of a corrosive or oxidising agent, possibly in excessive quantities. She stressed that the matter is still being examined.
Kyprianidou Leontidou explained that the situation was brought under control quickly thanks to the prompt arrival of emergency services, the evacuation of the premises, and adequate ventilation. She warned that chemical cleaners, especially those used for unblocking pipes, can release highly hazardous fumes if not handled correctly.
She emphasised that the greatest danger arises when different cleaning products are combined. Mixing drain unblockers with bleach, she said, is one of the most dangerous and unfortunately common mistakes, as it can immediately generate toxic vapours.
Although such products are legally sold with clear safety labels, she noted that they must be used strictly according to instructions. Failing to do so, either by applying too much or combining incompatible chemicals, creates serious risks both for the user and for anyone nearby.
