A 43-year-old Syrian man has confessed to killing 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva, according to police sources, as investigators continue efforts to locate her body in the mountainous areas of Limassol.
The confession marks a significant development in the investigation into Vasilieva's disappearance, which was reported to police on October 28, five days after she was last seen at her home in Mesa Geitonia.
The suspect was arrested on Friday evening at Larnaca Airport by officers from the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department. He appeared before the Limassol District Court on Saturday, which authorised his detention for a further six days to allow police to continue their inquiries.
Evidence and witness testimony presented during the court proceedings had already pointed investigators towards the possibility of a criminal act involving the missing woman.
Court proceedings also heard that the suspect allegedly had a romantic relationship with Vasilieva. Police were additionally investigating possible financial disagreements between the pair.
Following the reported confession, search operations are continuing in the Limassol mountain region in an effort to find the 61-year-old woman.
The circumstances surrounding her death and the events leading up to her disappearance remain under investigation.
