A senior citizen died in hospital on Tuesday, after he was crushed by two failing water tanks in Larnaca during repair work.

Nicosia resident Pericles Pericleous, aged 69, was carrying out maintenance work at his holiday residence in Kato Drys, Larnaca, when he got involved in an accident on Tuesday afternoon around 2:30pm.

While he was trying to repair a water storage tank that weighed about a tonne, a second tank weighing twice as much collapsed from the metal frame, with both tanks falling on Pericleous and crushing him.

The man’s wife was at the scene according to reports and called the emergency number. Rescuers arrived at the scene and managed to help Pericleous out.

He was rushed to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police officers from Lefkara station are investigating the incident.
