A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Famagusta Criminal Court after being found guilty of sexually abusing a child between 2019 and 2022 in the Famagusta district.
Alongside the prison term, the court issued a restraining order prohibiting the man from approaching children or areas where children gather for six years after his release.
The case adds to a growing list of child abuse investigations in Cyprus. Since the start of 2025, the Police’s Child Sexual Abuse Investigation Unit, under the Sub-Directorate for Vulnerable Persons, has received 290 complaints related to child sexual abuse.
So far this year, authorities have arrested 35 suspects, while 54 people have been convicted for offenses involving child sexual abuse and child pornography.
The numbers highlight a worrying trend, but also reflect the police’s more proactive approach in encouraging victims to come forward and ensuring offenders face justice.
