May 8th marks a significant day for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, celebrating the dedication of millions of volunteers who selflessly provide aid in times of crisis. The annual observance reminds the world that, even in the face of adversity, humanity persists, offering hope and relief where it’s needed most.
This year’s theme, “By Humanity’s Side,” emphasizes the Movement’s core mission: humanity. It is the driving force behind the Red Cross’s global efforts, from Ukraine to Gaza, ensuring assistance reaches even the most difficult-to-access areas.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which operates in 191 countries and is supported by over 16 million volunteers, is the largest humanitarian organization in the world. Established in 1859 by Henry Dunant after witnessing the suffering at the Battle of Solferino, the organization’s mission continues to grow, providing aid in armed conflicts, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises. It operates under seven Fundamental Principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.
This year’s observance also marks the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Fundamental Principles. The Movement remains steadfast in its mission while remembering the hundreds of volunteers who lost their lives in service.
In Cyprus, the Cyprus Red Cross (CRC) continues its vital work, providing material and moral support to vulnerable groups. Since its founding in 1950, the CRC has played a pivotal role, especially during Cyprus’s 1974 humanitarian crisis. Today, its services include aid for refugees, emergency support, psychosocial services, blood donations, and first aid training.
To celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, CRC is launching a nationwide fundraising campaign on May 8th, running until May 25th. Funds raised will support the organization’s ongoing programs and initiatives. Every donation helps further the mission of humanitarian aid and solidarity.
