The European Parliament approved a resolution Wednesday on Turkey's progress report regarding its EU accession process and relations, drafted by Spanish MEP Nacho Sanchez Amor.
In a related move, the Parliament also passed an oral amendment condemning the illegal visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the occupied territories of Cyprus.
A total of 629 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted on the resolution, with 367 in favor, 74 against, and 188 abstentions.
The oral amendment, introduced by Sanchez Amor and supported by several MEPs, reiterates the European Parliament's deep concern over unilateral actions that aim to entrench the division of Cyprus, rather than promote its reunification. The resolution condemned Erdogan's recent illegal visit to the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus and his provocative statements, which are seen as undermining the efforts of the United Nations, the EU, and the international community to restart meaningful negotiations within an agreed framework.
The resolution also expressed regret over these actions, calling them a direct illegal interference in the interests of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
