MEP Fidias faces backlash over disrespectful comments

Association calls for apology after MEP's response on missing persons

The Association of Spouses and Children of Missing Persons 1619 has condemned remarks made by MEP Fidias Panayiotou during a commemoration event for the Cyprus invasion on July 20. The group, which was present at the event marking the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus tragedy, expressed deep disappointment over Panayiotou's response to their requests for support.

At the end of the event, members of the association approached Panayiotou to seek his assistance in organizing a European Parliament event to raise awareness about missing persons. They also requested a photo and a statement from him regarding their ongoing efforts.

According to the association's statement, Panayiotou's response included derision and dismissive remarks. The MEP reportedly responded with comments such as, "You have a great idea about yourself," "Who do you think you are," and, "I have an uncle missing, but that’s not how the European Parliament works." His remarks were seen as mocking and disrespectful.

The association emphasized that the ultimate sacrifice for one's country is to give one's life, as many did 50 years ago, allowing others like Panayiotou to enjoy the freedoms and benefits of the state. They have called for an apology from Panayiotou to the families of the missing.

The group awaits a response from the MEP and remains hopeful for a more respectful engagement in the future.
