Monday forecast: Sunshine, heat and a questionable sense of what day it is

Temperatures climb to 37°C today as summer settles deeper across Cyprus.

It's Monday. Apparently.

At this stage of the summer, however, that information feels increasingly theoretical. Schools are closed, holiday plans are taking shape and the days are beginning to blend into one long stretch of sunshine, sea swims and arguments about whether 37°C is "hot" or merely "seasonal".

A seasonal low-pressure system continues to affect the region, although its main contribution will once again be the possibility of a few afternoon showers over the mountains and inland areas.

The day will begin mostly clear before cloud starts to build after midday. Isolated showers or thunderstorms may develop, mainly over higher ground and parts of the interior, while most coastal areas can expect another largely sunny day.

Temperatures will rise to around 37°C inland, 32°C along most coastal areas, 30°C on the west coast and 26°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight will remain mainly clear, with calm to slight seas and light winds across much of the island.

Tuesday follows a familiar script, with sunshine giving way to afternoon cloud and the possibility of isolated showers or thunderstorms over the mountains and inland districts. Wednesday and Thursday look simpler, with mainly clear conditions expected across Cyprus.

Temperatures are forecast to continue climbing through the week, reaching levels above the seasonal average and providing further evidence that summer is no longer warming up, it has already unpacked and made itself comfortable.
