Monday strikes back: Weather also refuses to return to work

Strong winds and scattered rain team up to match the post-Christmas mood.

Newsroom

Welcome to Monday, the one nobody RSVP’d to, especially after a luxurious 4-day Christmas weekend that started last Wednesday and emotionally ended… never.

Here’s your post-holiday reality check weather report:

Today (a.k.a. “Why Am I Awake?” Monday) has a low-pressure system hanging around, which honestly feels very on brand for the national mood. The day starts off partly cloudy, occasionally upgrading itself to mostly cloudy, like it’s unsure how much effort to put in. Very Monday behavior. In the western half of the island, you might get isolated rain showers, just enough rain to ruin your shoes but not enough to justify staying home. Up in the higher mountains, snow or sleet may appear, because mountains are overachievers and refuse to take holidays off. Winds will blow northwesterly to northerly, moderate to strong (4-5 Beaufort), which meteorologists translate as: “Hold onto your hat, dignity optional.” The sea will be rough, which is also how most of us are feeling emotionally today.

Temperatures:

  • 15°C inland, which is cold enough to complain, not cold enough to wear your big coat proudly
  • 16°C along the coast (show off)
  • 6°C in the mountains...let's move on, shall we?

Tonight (when you finally remember how sleep works), skies will be mostly clear, as if the weather itself is apologizing for today. Winds calm down a bit, and the sea goes from “angry” to “mildly annoyed.”

Tuesday starts out innocent enough as mostly clear, but by late night, the weather says, “Surprise!” Expect rain, isolated thunderstorms, and snow or sleet in the mountains, because clearly someone shook the weather globe.

Wednesday the plot thickens with more clouds, rain, thunderstorms, and even more mountain snow, just in case the mountains felt left out.

On Thursday (New Year’s Day), the weather calms down to partly cloudy, like it’s trying to start 2026 with better intentions than the rest of us.

Temperatures Through Thursday won't have any big changes, staying near or slightly below average, which means the weather, much like your motivation this week, is doing the bare minimum.

In summary, it’s windy, occasionally wet, mildly cold, emotionally accurate, and absolutely Monday after Christmas energy. Stay warm, stay caffeinated, and remember, at least the calendar claims it’s Monday.
