Merry Christmas! The big day is finally here. Before we get into the forecast, we have a very serious question for our readers: What kind of gift-opening family are you? Do you tear into everything on Christmas Eve, wait patiently for Christmas morning, hold out for Saint Basil on New Year's, or go the full distance to Epiphany? Let us know!
But as we celebrate, let’s remember the reason for the season, though the weather seems to think the reason for the season is unpredictability. A weak high-pressure system is technically in charge, but it’s feeling a bit generous with the rain.
Here is your forecast for today: The morning should be relatively calm, perfect for church or unwrapping those presents. However, don't plan a long, uncovered outdoor lunch because mainly after midday, things get interesting. We are expecting local showers and isolated thunderstorms. If you hear a rumble, it’s not just your stomach waiting for the turkey; it’s the sky. We might even see some hail, nature’s version of frozen confetti. And for those dreaming of a White Christmas, you technically get one, but only if you are standing on the absolute highest peaks of Troodos, where sleet or snow is possible.
Temperature-wise, it’s a very comfortable Mediterranean Christmas. We are looking at around 19°C inland and 20°C on the coast. You can leave the heavy winter coats in the closet unless you are heading to the mountains, where it will be a crisp 9°C.
Tonight, the clouds will hang around temporarily, but the winds will calm down to a gentle westerly breeze, making it a peaceful night to recover from the feast.
Looking ahead to Friday, also known as Boxing Day (whatever that actually means... is it for boxing up leftovers? Fighting with relatives? Who knows?), as well as Saturday and Sunday, the pattern sticks. Expect partly cloudy skies with those signature afternoon showers or thunderstorms. The temperatures will stay pleasantly above average until Saturday, before dropping slightly on Sunday to remind us that it is, in fact, winter.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
