The Cyprus Fire Service has paid tribute to the dogs serving with its K9 team, recognising their contribution to search and rescue operations carried out by the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK).
In a social media post marking World Dog Day on August 26, the Fire Service described the dogs as “partners, companions and valuable members of the Fire Service”.
The K9 team is trained to assist firefighters in locating people following building collapses and other incidents involving rubble. The dogs also operate in open areas when people are reported missing.
The Fire Service said each dog undergoes extensive training and requires discipline and dedication to carry out its role effectively. Their work depends heavily on the close relationship developed with their handlers, with the dogs and firefighters working together during operations.
The service introduced eight of its four-legged colleagues: Carlos, Hermes, Depy, Ninja, Sar, Alan, Roxy and Atlas.
“Each one is unique. All are valuable,” the Fire Service said, thanking the dogs for their contribution and describing them as tireless colleagues.
The K9 team forms part of the Fire Service's specialist emergency response capabilities, with the dogs' ability to detect people making them particularly useful in search operations where conventional methods may be difficult or time-consuming.
