Monday weather report: Stormy skies, cold truths, and the first full week back

Rain, wind, mountain snow, and no sign of easing us into January.

Newsroom

Well, it’s Monday. Again. Our first full, proper, no-escape-route week back at work. Yes, yes, technically the holidays ended last week and we did return to our desks… but Friday arrived quickly enough to soften the blow. This time, there’s no such luck. So, good luck to you (and to us) as we bravely face a full five-day stretch of responsibility.

That said, we’re big believers in seasonal denial. Therefore, for a strictly limited time, we’ll be observing the old (Julian) calendar instead of the usual Gregorian calendar. The Christmas tree stays up until January 20th, the day after Old Calendar Epiphany. Festive stubbornness is a lifestyle choice we highly recommend.

Weather Report (hold onto your hats…literally)

A low-pressure system has set its sights on us, clouds first, manners last. It’s currently lounging northwest of Cyprus and will drift southeast, dragging along a cold air mass that clearly didn’t RSVP.

Today: Expect mostly cloudy skies with on-and-off rain and the occasional thunderstorm making dramatic entrances. Some storms may throw in hail for effect. Snow is expected in the higher mountains and may be heavy in places, excellent news for snow, less so for people. Fog will make guest appearances in mountainous areas.

Winds will range from assertive to borderline rude (4–6 Beaufort), especially along the coasts and in the mountains. Seas will be rough to very rough.

Temperatures will be about 14°C inland, 16°C on the coast, and a brisk 3°C in the mountains, where frost will also be lurking quietly.

Tonight: Clouds remain firmly in charge, with local rain and isolated thunderstorms mainly in the west and north. Mountain snow continues, fog settles in, and frost does what frost does best, i.e. freeze things. Winds ease slightly but the sea stays grumpy.

Tuesday: Still cloudy, still damp, still dramatic. Local rain, isolated storms, and more mountain snow. Temperatures drop below seasonal averages, just in case you were getting comfortable.

Wednesday: A plot twist! Mostly clear skies with some passing clouds. Temperatures rise slightly and morale improves accordingly.

Thursday: Partly cloudy with isolated rain and a chance of sleet or snow on the highest Troodos peaks. Temperatures climb again, returning to something resembling seasonal normality.
