Strong winds prompt yellow weather warning across the island

Gale-force gusts expected on Friday as southwesterly to northwesterly winds intensify.

Newsroom

The Meteorological Service has announced a yellow-level warning for strong winds, set to take effect on Friday.

Forecasts indicate that the island will experience southwesterly to northwesterly winds ranging from strong to near-gale intensity. Average wind speeds are expected to reach force 6 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, with some areas briefly experiencing force 7. In addition, gusts may intensify further, occasionally reaching storm strength, equivalent to force 8.

The warning will be active from 08:00 on Friday morning and remain in force until 22:00 the same evening.

Weather outlook

During the night, conditions will be mostly cloudy, with rainfall developing first in western and northern regions before extending across the rest of the island. As the night progresses, isolated thunderstorms may form, particularly in the northwest. Snowfall is anticipated over the highest mountainous areas.

Winds will blow from the southwest to northwest at moderate to strong levels, around force 4 to 5 Beaufort, increasing at times to very strong, force 6, especially along exposed windward coasts. Sea conditions are expected to deteriorate gradually, becoming rough.

Minimum temperatures will fall to about 9°C inland and along the southeast, northern, and eastern coasts, around 11°C in other coastal areas, and close to 1°C in the highest mountain regions.
