Clouds behaving badly while calm Thursday slips into a windy meltdown

Dusty skies and mild temperatures by day give way to strengthening winds and a stormy overnight mood swing.

Newsroom

Today’s weather is stuck in an identity crisis. High pressure is still loitering, low pressure is on the way with bad intentions, and the atmosphere can’t quite decide what mood it’s in. There’ll be some lingering dust in the air, clouds doing most of the work, and winds that start off well-behaved before getting ideas later on, especially near the coast.

Expect a mostly cloudy day with mid and high cloud stealing the spotlight. During the afternoon, western areas may see lower clouds drifting in and squeezing out the odd light shower. Nothing dramatic, just enough to be annoying.

Winds begin from the northeast to southeast, light to moderate and fairly civilised. By late afternoon they swing around to the southwest–northwest without getting much stronger, just more opinionated. The sea stays slight to locally moderate at first, then starts to roughen up in the west and north. Temperatures hover around 20°C inland, about 21°C on the coast, and a cooler 14°C up in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather stops pretending. Cloud cover thickens into a proper grey blanket and rain moves in from the west, spreading across the island overnight. A few thunderstorms may join the party and the highest mountains can expect snow. Winds ramp up from the southwest to northwest, becoming strong inland and very strong along the coasts, with near-gale gusts in exposed spots. The sea responds accordingly, turning rough to very rough, particularly on western and northern coasts.

Looking ahead
Friday brings an energetic and unsettled setup with rain, isolated thunderstorms and even some hail in the stronger cells. Snow continues in the mountains, winds stay very strong to near-gale, and temperatures take a noticeable dip to around or slightly below average.

Saturday offers a short-lived breather with mostly cloudy skies, some local rain, snow at higher elevations, lighter winds and a small temperature recovery.

Sunday forgets all about being calm. Cloudy skies return with rain, isolated thunderstorms and mountain snow, while strong southwesterly winds make another noisy appearance. Temperatures behave themselves and stay close to seasonal levels.

In short, today eases you in gently, tonight turns rowdy, Friday goes full drama, Saturday calms down briefly, and Sunday decides to have another go. Keep your jacket handy and don’t trust the sky.
