Wednesday, January 7th: The dusty lull after the holidays

Light dust and high clouds mark the day after Epiphany.

Newsroom

The holidays are officially behind us. Epiphany has passed, the "Kalikantzaroi" (goblins) have hopefully been banished back underground, and we are left with... well, dust.

That’s right, a weak low-pressure system is lurking, but before it arrives, we have to deal with a bit of atmospheric clutter. Light dust is suspended in the air today, giving the sky a slightly hazy, unfiltered look.

Today will feel strangely warm for January. We are looking at increased mid-to-high-level clouds that might make the sun look a bit like a frosted lightbulb. The winds are blowing from the east, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, but the temperatures are the real headline. We are reaching a balmy 19°C inland and a positively spring-like 21°C on the coast. Even the mountains are a mild 14°C. Enjoy it, because it’s a trap.

Tonight, the clouds will stick around, but the weather remains relatively calm with light winds. It’s the quiet moment in the movie before the villain kicks down the door.

Tomorrow (Thursday) offers more of the same dusty, cloudy indecision. But by Thursday evening, the mood changes. A new low-pressure system will begin to affect the island.

By the early hours of Friday, winter returns with a vengeance. We are expecting:

  • Local rain and isolated thunderstorms.
  • Snowfall on the highest peaks of Troodos.
  • Locally very strong winds (hold onto your umbrellas).
  • A noticeable drop in temperature.

Saturday will keep the winter vibes going with increased cloudiness and isolated showers. So, take advantage of today's warm (albeit dusty) weather to run your errands, because Friday is looking like a "stay inside and watch the rain" kind of day.
