Today is Epiphany, and across Cyprus the bravest among us will be diving into winter seas, chasing the cross, and a year’s worth of glory and blessings. The rest of us will cheer them on from the shore, wrapped in scarves and coats, before retreating indoors to warmer comforts… and perhaps a generous plate of honey-soaked loukoumades.
Weather-wise, a calm spell is still holding its ground. High pressure continues to influence the island, although a change is on the horizon, with lower pressure slowly approaching from Thursday. A touch of light dust may also make an appearance from time to time.
For today, conditions will remain mostly clear, with some high clouds drifting overhead. Winds will blow from the northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, but may occasionally freshen locally to 4–5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough to rough.
Temperatures will feel pleasantly mild for the season, reaching 19°C inland, around 20°C along the coasts, and 14°C in the higher mountains.
As we move into the evening, high clouds will become more frequent. Winds will turn northerly to northeasterly, remaining light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort. Sea conditions will be slightly rough along the western and southern coasts, and rougher to the north and east.
Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll see increased cloud at times, with the first signs of unsettled weather arriving late Thursday night, when local rain is expected, mainly in the western half of the island.
By Friday, the atmosphere turns more dramatic, with intermittent local rain and the chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Temperatures will stay above average for the season through Thursday, but a noticeable drop is expected on Friday, reminding us that winter still has a say.
