A mother who recently gave birth to a baby boy delivered the newborn to the Limassol general hospital claiming she was unable to take care of it, local media reported Wednesday.

The mother, of Indian nationality, gave birth to a baby boy in early July at a state hospital, before mother and child were transferred to the Limassol general hospital some hours later for treatment.

After a few days, they were discharged from the Limassol hospital and went to the mother’s place of residence.

But some days later, the mother returned to the Limassol hospital holding her newborn in her arms, and asked medical staff there to take over the child’s care, claiming she was unable to care for him herself.

Reports claimed the newborn suffered health problems, and is receiving the appropriate treatment from staff of the Limassol general hospital.

The heads of the hospital, in cooperation with the social services, have already began efforts of finding a foster family for the child. Reports claimed that the social services have received several expressions of interest for the adoption of the infant that is expected to be transferred to the Makarios hospital in Nicosia on Thursday.

The story of the baby boy’s journey made the rounds of social media, with donations flooding in after a relevant request for blankets, wet wipes and diapers by a humanitarian organization.
