Mysterious lights illuminate the skies over Xylofagos and Larnaca

Residents captivated by SpaceX's ambitious project, sparking wonder and speculation

Newsroom

Residents of Xylofagos and Larnaca were astonished by the sight of peculiar lights illuminating the night sky on Monday. Many of them promptly took to social media to share their experiences.

A video showcasing the extraordinary event has been uploaded on the Kairofili Cyprus page.

Despite the various speculations that have arisen, these luminous dots can be attributed to Elon Musk's Starlink SpaceX satellites.

Specifically, these are part of the "Starlink Satellites Project." But what exactly is this project? Starlink aims to position thousands of small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), approximately 550 kilometers above the Earth's surface. Their primary function is to transmit internet signals to ground transceivers, which will subsequently distribute the data locally or relay it directly to the Starlink router.

As of November 2020, 955 Starlink satellites were already orbiting the Earth. However, SpaceX has grander plans, intending to deploy a minimum of 12,000 satellites, with the possibility of expanding that number to as many as 30,000 or even 42,000. This ambitious endeavor seeks to achieve comprehensive global internet coverage through the Starlink network.

The mastermind behind this groundbreaking initiative is none other than Elon Musk, widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the world. This phenomenon has been observed in several countries, including Greece, Lebanon, Turkey, the United States, and Israel, in recent times.
