Municipalities across Cyprus are staging a three-hour peaceful protest Monday, pushing back against what they say is growing government interference in how local authorities manage their work and finances.
The protest will run from 9 a.m. to noon following a unanimous decision by the board of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities.
The Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia confirmed it will join the action, saying the dispute goes to the heart of whether municipalities can make decisions for their communities without excessive involvement from central government.
Put simply, local authorities want greater control over their own administration and money, two areas they say are essential if they are to respond properly to residents’ everyday needs.
For the public, however, the immediate question is whether municipal services will be affected. Paralimni-Deryneia said it will do everything reasonably possible to keep services running and ensure urgent and essential needs are handled during the three-hour action.
The municipality described the protest as peaceful but firm, saying its purpose is to protect local government, municipal institutions, and the residents they serve.
The action signals a widening rift between municipalities and the central government over how much freedom local authorities should have following changes to the way local government operates in Cyprus.
