Netanyahu fires defense minister amid growing political tensions

Dismissal follows months of clashes over Gaza strategy, judicial reforms, and coalition pressures

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after prolonged disputes on national security and domestic issues, further straining Netanyahu's coalition government. Netanyahu announced the firing on Tuesday, citing an erosion of trust between him and Gallant. Following the dismissal, Foreign Minister Israel Katz will step in as defense minister, while Gideon Sa’ar will assume Katz's previous role.

Gallant responded publicly, stating that Israel's security would remain his primary concern. Speculation about his ouster had circulated for months, as Netanyahu's administration struggled with internal divisions and external criticism. Gallant, known for his critical stance, had frequently opposed Netanyahu’s strategies, particularly on Gaza, where they clashed over Israel’s military objectives and the need for a potential ceasefire. Notably, Gallant criticized Netanyahu’s insistence on controlling the Gaza-Egypt border, seeing it as an obstacle to negotiating the release of hostages. His opposition angered far-right coalition members, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who had called for Gallant’s removal as early as September.

The two leaders’ tensions intensified in early 2023 when Gallant openly opposed Netanyahu’s judicial reform bill, a proposal sparking widespread public protests. Gallant warned that the reforms, which would increase government influence over judicial appointments, could destabilize Israel's military by polarizing the country. Netanyahu initially threatened to fire Gallant over this opposition but reversed the decision following public and political pressure. The pair’s relationship continued to fray, exacerbated by disagreements over compulsory military service for ultra-Orthodox men—a measure Gallant supported but that Netanyahu’s far-right allies opposed.

Netanyahu’s decision to replace Gallant underscores his struggle to maintain unity within his coalition, even as it risks inflaming Israel’s political landscape further.
