New pediatric surgery department completed at Makarios Hospital

Upgrades are also underway in the neonatal intensive care unit, children’s emergency department, maternity wards and other key areas.

A new pediatric surgery department has been completed at Makarios Hospital, while renovation work continues across several other units caring for children, newborns, and mothers.

The State Health Services Organisation, known as Okypy, said the wider upgrade includes the neonatal intensive care unit, the children’s accident and emergency department, maternity departments, pediatric wards, and the Thalassemia Centre.

For families, these are not simply cosmetic changes. They affect the rooms where premature babies receive intensive care, where frightened children arrive in an emergency and where parents may spend long days or nights beside a hospital bed.

According to Okypy, the projects are intended to improve both the hospital’s infrastructure and the conditions in which patients receive treatment.

The work forms part of an ongoing effort to modernize Makarios Hospital, with upgrades planned around the practical needs identified through its daily operation.

“Okypy’s goal is to create an environment that meets the needs of children, mothers, and their families, while also improving their daily care experience,” the organization said.

The completion of the pediatric surgery department marks one part of that larger effort. Work in the remaining units is continuing, although Okypy did not provide a timetable for when all the renovations are expected to be finished.

For parents and hospital staff, the real measure of the project will be whether the improvements lead to safer, more comfortable, and better-organized care—particularly in departments where patients and their families are already facing some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
