Ersin Tatar’s descent upon Ankara but also the intense rumours regarding a reopening of the coastal front of the fenced-off city of Varosha have over the past days mobilized Nicosia.
Already, the President of the Republic has contacted the UNSG, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has undertaken an initiative to de-escalate the crisis, the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, while government circles claim there is also a strong involvement of the UK and Athens.
In the event that recent information is confirmed, the government is preparing an appeal to the Security Council, ruling out the possibility of a new resolution or presidential statement. Government circles note that such a development will make the resumption of negotiations difficult.
According to Nicosia, Ankara will send the message that such a move does not change the status of the city, nor does it violate Security Council resolutions.
