Nicosia Municipality has increased mosquito-control operations across the capital following recent rainfall, with inspections and treatments being carried out in areas where breeding sites have been identified or residents have reported problems.
Municipal crews are working every day, including weekends, using approved mosquito-control products. Attention is being directed towards waterways, drainage infrastructure and locations where rainwater can collect and remain stagnant.
Teams are carrying out treatments along the channels of the Klímos, Katéva and Kotsírka rivers, as well as at grates covering underground sections of the waterways. Stormwater drains and other areas where standing water has been found are also being inspected and treated.
Engomi among the areas receiving particular attention
Engomi has received particular attention in recent operations. Work has been carried out around the Klímos area from the Lakatamia boundary towards Agios Dometios, including locations near the cemetery and the State Fair grounds.
Municipal services have also worked along the open channel on Iroon Street, while inspections have taken place at grates along the Klímos pedestrian walkway and around 28th October Avenue.
The municipality is also checking locations that can provide suitable conditions for mosquitoes to breed. These include properties with abandoned swimming pools, lift shafts at construction sites and existing buildings, open channels and other places where water can become trapped.
Residents urged to check their own properties
Nicosia Municipality said residents have an important role to play in limiting mosquito breeding. Households are being asked to inspect their homes, gardens and outdoor areas regularly and remove sources of standing water.
Potential problem spots include buckets and other containers, plant saucers, water bowls for pets and birds, small ponds, abandoned pools and gutters. Even small amounts of trapped water can provide a breeding site.
Construction sites can also present a risk, particularly where water collects inside lift shafts.
The municipality said its teams investigate all mosquito-related complaints submitted by residents. Inspections are not confined to the property named in a complaint, with neighbouring premises also checked for possible breeding sites.
According to municipal inspections, a mosquito breeding site is found in roughly 60% of reported cases, either at the property where the complaint originated or at a neighbouring home.
Public health effort
Mosquito control is being treated by the municipality as an issue linked to public health, hygiene and quality of life. Nicosia Municipality and its Health Services Department said they will continue monitoring mosquito activity and carrying out targeted treatments where necessary.
The municipality is also calling on residents to take preventative measures at home, particularly after rainfall, when containers and other outdoor spaces can collect water and create suitable conditions for mosquito breeding.
