Over 1,270 prisoner transfers to hospitals in 2024

The central prisons respond to reports

In 2024, there were 1,271 transfers of prisoners to public and private hospitals, according to a statement from the Department of Prisons.

In response to a report by the online newspaper Cyprus Times regarding the management of prisoner requests—particularly those related to transfers to hospitals or specialized doctors—the Department of Prisons asserts that the claims made in the report are "baseless and unfounded."

The statement specifies that all prisoners receive primary healthcare on a 24-hour basis, similar to the medical care provided to other citizens.

Furthermore, it adds that if the Department's doctor deems it necessary to refer a prisoner to a public or private hospital, they will recommend the transfer for medical reasons. The Management will then approve and carry out the transfer while ensuring all appropriate security measures are in place.

In light of this, the statement concludes, "The claims in the aforementioned report are dismissed as evidently unfounded and baseless."
