Warmer days ahead after record-breaking cold

Cold snap grips the island, but relief is on the way—plus, the search for Balou continues in Troodos.

Newsroom

Brrr, Cyprus! If you thought last night felt extra chilly, you weren’t imagining things. It was officially the coldest night in over 40 years, shattering the previous record of -3.3°C set in 1985. With crops freezing in agricultural areas, this cold snap isn't just uncomfortable—it’s hitting us where it hurts economically, too.

But hang in there! The cold air mass Coral is still lingering, but temperatures are on the rise. Today will be partly cloudy with light winds and highs around 13°C inland and along the coast, while the mountains will stay frosty at just 4°C. Tonight, expect increased cloudiness and another chilly dip—down to -3°C in the higher mountains, where frost will set in once again.

Midweek brings the chance of some isolated showers, especially in the mountains, and by Friday, we could see local rain, storms, and even some fresh snowfall in the peaks. The good news? A noticeable temperature increase is on the way through Thursday, bringing things back to more typical seasonal levels.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for Balou. If you've been following social media or TV, you may have seen that his owners lost him in Troodos a few days ago. They’re heartbroken and have even offered a reward for any information that leads to his safe return. Balou isn’t just a pet—he’s family, and they’re holding onto hope that someone will spot him. So, if you're heading up to the mountains, keep a lookout. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll be the one to bring him home.

Stay warm, stay safe, and brighter (warmer) days are ahead!
