Charred remains were discovered in a burning vehicle on Thursday when fire fighters responded to a fire in Paphos district, with additional reports saying the body was found in the backseat.

Police officers and fire fighters were scrambled to Anarita on Thursday morning, around 7am, following information about a fire in the forested area of Dasoudi.

Reports said a car was destroyed by fire while the charred remains of an unknown person was also discovered inside the vehicle.

Police said a preliminary investigation was underway without ruling any scenarios including murder.

Little or no information was immediately available but local media reported that the body was discovered in the backseat of the vehicle.

Paphos deputy police director Nicos Tsiappis said state forensic examiners Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou were expected at the scene along with experts from other agencies.

The gender of the body and the identity of the vehicle owner could not be ascertained in the early stages of the investigation.
