A 4½-month-old baby is fighting for life at Makarios Hospital after doctors discovered a serious brain hemorrhage, police said Wednesday.
The infant was first brought by its parents to Limassol General Hospital, where physicians determined the injuries required immediate transfer to the capital. Medical staff at Makarios reported the case to police after finding the parents’ account of how the child was hurt did not match the severity of the injuries.
Investigators are examining whether the baby may have suffered “shaken baby syndrome,” a condition linked to violent shaking.
Authorities said the child’s parents were arrested and appeared before Limassol District Court, which ordered them held for four days while officers pursue charges including grievous bodily harm, child abuse and endangering a minor.
