PASYKAF launches major wellness campaign for women

New initiative urges regular medical screenings to detect illness early.

A local health organization has introduced a major campaign targeting the well-being of women across Cyprus, emphasizing the critical role of regular medical checkups. The initiative, launched by the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF) on July 5, aims to motivate the female population to actively participate in early detection programs.

According to data compiled by the Cyprus Cancer Registry between 2018 and 2022, breast cancer continues to rank as the most frequent malignancy detected among women nationwide. Additionally, significant numbers of individuals face diagnoses of gynecological cancers annually, including malignancies of the cervix, ovaries, endometrium, and vulva.

Public health officials state that identifying these conditions at an early stage substantially improves the likelihood of successful medical intervention. Doctors point to routine gynecological assessments, HPV tests, mammograms, ultrasounds, and regular self-examinations as primary defensive measures. These screening methods allow medical professionals to identify tissue changes before serious illnesses can progress.

"Taking time for self-care is a fundamental component of proactive health management and personal empowerment," noted Georgia Orfanou, Director of Prevention and Social Marketing at PASYKAF.

Beyond routine tests, medical specialists advise individuals to monitor their bodies for persistent symptoms or unusual shifts in their menstrual cycles. Organizers emphasize that women should discuss any physical irregularities directly with their gynecologists or personal physicians to obtain customized medical guidance.

The campaign also emphasizes the preventative value of the HPV vaccine. Healthcare experts state that the immunization safely reduces the risk of developing cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, and throat cancers.

PASYKAF, which marks four decades of public health service on the island, is conducting the outreach effort alongside multiple domestic medical associations. These partners include the national societies for dermatology, gynecology, colposcopy, oncology, and surgery. Financial backing for the educational drive is provided by Allwyn Cyprus.
