A routine Tuesday morning commute turned into a horrifying scene in Limassol when a police officer allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life in what authorities are treating as a suspected murder-suicide.
The shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. in the Zakaki area, near a school, leaving residents and passersby in shock.
According to police, the officer was found dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed by ambulance to hospital, where she remains intubated and in critical condition.
An eyewitness who happened to be driving past the scene described a desperate attempt to intervene moments before the shooting.
The man said he noticed a couple inside a parked vehicle and heard raised voices. Concerned, he stopped and shouted at the man to let the woman go after seeing him allegedly holding her by the neck.
According to the eyewitness, the man replied, "Go away, you're not my wife," before turning to the woman and telling her to say he was not hurting her.
The witness said the woman did not speak but instead gestured with her hand, signaling that she needed help.
He then claimed the man pulled a handgun from his waist, pointed it at him, and warned him to leave, saying, "Go away. I'm not playing with you."
Moments later, the witness said, the man allegedly opened fire on the woman before turning the weapon on himself.
"It all happened in the middle of the road outside the school," the eyewitness said, describing a scene that unfolded in a matter of seconds.
Police have not officially confirmed the eyewitness's account, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The area was cordoned off throughout the morning as forensic experts and investigators searched for evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the couple or commented on what may have led to the incident.
The case has sent shockwaves through Limassol, not only because of its tragic nature but also because it involves a serving police officer.
Police are expected to examine witness statements, forensic evidence and any background information that could help determine what led to the shooting.
